The BMC recently penalised a pothole contractor in-charge of K-East and K-West wards the two largest in the city for failing to complete repairs within the stipulated 48 hours after a complaint.
Late last week,Additional Municipal Commissioner SVR Srinivas,in-charge of the civic roads department, suspended Atash Ashirwad appointed by the BMC to attend to potholes in the two wards comprising Andheri,Juhu,Vile Parle,Marol and Jogeshwari.
The contractor was unable to carry out quality repair work in a time-bound manner because his machines were defunct. We had given him some more days but the problem persisted. So,we suspended him for two weeks. Contractors of neighbouring wards will carry out the work here and the suspended contractor will foot the bills, said Srinivas.
This is the first time this year that the civic body has taken such stringent action against a contractor. It had in June approved a Rs 59-crore contract for repairing damaged roads this monsoon. The tender has been divided among 14 contractors appointed for seven zones of the city.
Since the start of monsoon in June, citizens have reported over 650 potholes in the K-East and K-West wards on the civic pothole tracking website,www.voiceofcitizen.com. As for Mumbai, over 10,000 complaints have been reported since June 10 while repairs works on around 2,000 potholes still remain.
