Reliance Jio Infocomm Chairman Akash Ambani on Wednesday said the country’s largest telco is working with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay to launch an indigenous Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, which will be called ‘Bharat GPT’.

“We have been working on a project with IIT Bombay to launch a Bharat GPT programme,” he said, while speaking at Techfest, an annual three-day science and technology festival of IIT Bombay which began on Wednesday.

Reliance Jio is working with Prof Ganesh Ramakrishnan, from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay, on generative pretrained transformers / large language model-based solutions for key business verticals like telecom and retail.

Talking about the scope of AI, Ambani said, “At present, we have just scratched the surface with large language models and generative AI and the next decade will be defined by these applications,” Ambani said.

Ambani said AI will transform every area of products and services. “We are working very hard to launch AI not only as a vertical inside our organisation, but also horizontally across all our sectors,” he said.

Apart from IIT-Bombay, a consortium of other IITs will also be working on the project.

“The Bharat GPT consortium, which aims to deliver India-centric multi-lingual and multi-modal GPT/LLMs, is a unique Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative led by IIT Bombay. The consortium consists of other premier academic institutes such as IIT Madras, IIT Mandi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Kanpur, IIIT Hyderabad, IIM Indore, and Bhashini (a division of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology). The industry partners include Seetha Mahalaxmi Healthcare Private Limited led by Dr Vishnu Vardhan, Reliance Jio, and NASSCOM, while the consortium is presently working closely with DARPG (Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances),” Prof Ramakrishnan said.
