Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal (File) Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal will be lodged in Arthur Road jail after he was sent to judicial custody for two weeks by a special court in Mumbai on Thursday. Goyal was arrested on September 1 by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with alleged money laundering of a loan given by Canara Bank for operational work of the airline company.
Goyal had since then been in the custody of the agency for interrogation. On Thursday, after the ED did not seek further custody, the court ordered him to be sent to Arthur Road jail.
Produced before the court by the ED, Goyal sought to be sent to the Arthur Road jail instead of Taloja Central Prison on the city’s outskirts. Goyal also moved multiple pleas and one of them sought to allow his family physician, a regular medical consultant and personal specialist doctor to conduct a medical check-up on him daily.
The applications moved on behalf of Goyal through his lawyer Ameet Naik said he had complained of uneasiness and dizziness on Wednesday and was taken for a check-up at the state-run Sir J J Hospital, where his heart rate was found to be low.
The plea said he has a history of heart disease and has also undergone a bypass surgery, so is prone to cardiac arrest. Previously, he was operated as there was an 80 per cent blockage in his left main artery, the plea said, requiring him to have constant medical attention and hence sought check-ups for various ailments regularly while in jail.
The plea also said that he is undergoing treatment for various other medical issues like hypertension, diabetes, and restricted mobility issues and has anxiety symptoms.
Another plea sought proper bedding facilities in jail, considering his medical conditions and home-cooked food as per dietary prescription. He also sought permission for legal consultation and lawyer visit. He also sought permission to meet or call his family members for an hour daily. The plea said that his wife has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy.
The plea said that he has no contact with her and other family members and would be worried about their well-being in jail. The court has sought a response from the jail authorities on his pleas.
The ED had arrested Goyal, claiming he had siphoned off the loan amount given by the bank to the airline and allegedly diverted company funds by appointing his family members in the company and paying salaries of a company floated by his daughter. Goyal has denied these claims, stating that the money was utilised towards the company.
