It’s official: NITIE is now IIM Mumbai
According to the Gazette, the Board of NITIE shall continue to function until a new Board is constituted for that Institute under the IIM Act.

THE NATIONAL Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) will now be known as Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai, as it received the much-awaited final stamp with declaration of the Gazette on the Indian Institute of Managements (Amendment) Act 2023, on Wednesday.
The Gazette also recommends constitution of new bodies while instructing that the existing ones will continue to function until then.
According to the Gazette, the Board of NITIE shall continue to function until a new Board is constituted for that Institute under the IIM Act.
Upon constitution of a new Board, the Members of the Board holding office before such constitution shall cease to hold office.
Similarly, the Academic Council constituted in relation to NITIE, before the commencement of the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Act, 2023 shall continue to function until a new Academic Council is constituted for that Institute under this Act.
“Until the first regulations in relation to the NITIE are made under this Act, the existing rules and bye-laws of the institute shall continue to apply with necessary modifications and adaptations insofar as they are not inconsistent with the provisions of this Act,” states the gazette.
According to sources from the institute, NITIE’s existing board is expected to continue until the end of its tenure before the new board is constituted. Whereas in case of the academic council, a senior official shared, “The existing academic council was formed realising in line with the IIM Act in anticipation of the announcement. However, changes as recommended by the Act will be incorporated as soon as possible.”
Regarding by-laws of the institute, an official shared that the statutes of all existing IIMs are being studied in line with the new IIM Act and accordingly new statutes will be prepared for IIM Mumbai to be presented in front of the board for approvals.
