Indian contingent bags three gold, two silver medals at International Physics Olympiad
In the country-wise medals tally, India was placed at the fifth position, sharing the position with Romania and Taiwan.

India won three gold and two silver medals at the 53rd International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2023, held in Tokyo, Japan.
The IPhO was held from July 10 to 17 in Japan and a total of 387 students from 82 countries participated in the competition. The Indian team consisted of five students and all of them won medals.
Student members from the team were Aditya (GOLD) from Delhi’s Pitampura, Dhruv Shah (GOLD) from Maharashtra’s Pune, Mehul Borad (GOLD) from Telangana’s Kachiguda, Raghav Goyal (SILVER) from Chandigarh and Rhythm Kedia (SILVER) from Chhattisgarh.
The team was led by two leaders – Professor Arun V. Kulkarni (BITS Pilani, Goa), Dr Shirish Pathare (HBCSE, TIFR), and two Scientific Observers — Professor Anwesh Mazumdar (HBCSE, Mumbai) and Dr Leena Joshi (St Xaviers’ College, Mumbai).
In the country-wise medals tally, India was placed at the fifth position, jointly with Romania and Taiwan. China, South Korea and the contingent of 5 Russian students came at the top with 5 gold medals, followed by the USA with 4 golds and 1 silver. In all, 37 gold, 74 silver, and 103 bronze medals were awarded.
The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) – Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) which is nodal Centre for training and selecting the students for the International Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy and Astrophysics congratulated the team.
In a statement issued by Mazumdar, National Coordinator, Science Olympiads, congratulated the students and rest of the delegation for the good performance, including the Physics Olympiad Cell and the resource pool of external teachers and mentors who trained the students during the orientation and pre-departure camps at the HBCSE. The final team is selected through various stages of the National Olympiad Examination conducted by HBCSE
Mazumdar said, “We thank the National Steering Committee on Science Olympiads, teacher organisations and the funding agencies of the Government of India for their continued strong support of the Olympiad programme which enables us to showcase Indian talent on the international arena.”
