India wins one gold and 4 silver at Astronomy, Astrophysics Olympiad
Team secures 8th position among 52 countries

The Indian team secured one gold and four silver medals at the 17th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) 2024, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 17 to 26. The team also secured eighth position among 52 participating countries.
Daksh Tayalia from Bengaluru won the gold medal, while Aayush Kuthari and Sanidhya Saraf from Pune, Banibrata Majee from Hyderabad, and Panini from Bihar won a silver medal each.
The team was led by Prof Bhargav Vaidya of IIT Indore and Pritesh Ranadive of HBCSE-TIFR, Mumbai, along with scientific observers professor Arnab Bhattacharya of HBCSE-TIFR, Mumbai, Dr Vaibhav Pant of ARIES, Nainital, Dr Akshat Singhal of HBCSE-TIFR, Mumbai, and Yash Mehta of Open AI. Professor Aniket Sule of HBCSE-TIFR attended as the current president of IOAA.
At IOAA 2024, in which 232 students competed, India trailed Iran that won five gold medals, USA, which got three gold, and Romania, South Korea, Singapore, Slovenia, and Canada that won two gold medals each.
The team will be honored at HBCSE on Thursday. The IOAA competition comprises three components — theory (50%), observation (25%), and data analysis (25%), with an additional team competition involving mixed-nation teams. This year’s theoretical problems included topics such as sundial mechanisms, galaxy cluster mass estimation, elliptical asteroid orbits, white dwarf physics, and black hole accretion discs.
The IOAA 2025 will be hosted in Mumbai by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), which prepares students for international science and mathematics Olympiads. HBCSE director professor Arnab Bhattacharya received the IOAA flag from the current hosts.
Last month, the Indian team also secured fourth place at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2024 in which 108 countries participated. It was India’s best performance since it began participating in the event since 1989.
