Walking into the new Leaping Windows Cafe and Comic Library
is easy. Walking out empty handed isnt. The online library, which shot to fame for being the only one to offer graphic novels, comic books and Manga, has had a page on their website promising a cafe since November last year. This page still hasnt been updated, but dedicated patrons are already finding their way to the one-of-a-kind cafe that opened last Monday in Versova.
With three levels at its disposal, the cafe is inspired by the Manga cafes of Japan. The ground floor and the mezzanine serve refreshments and beverages. The food is sourced from local caterers and features cookies and sandwiches. These make for the perfect snack to go with their range of teas brewed from leaves, not bags freshly-ground coffees and iced drinks. The prices are quite reasonable Rs 65 for a chicken sandwich,Rs 45 for an Earl Grey and Rs 15 for a cookie making it easy on the pocket for patrons planning to lounge there for hours.
The focus of the venture is still the library, which will continue taking orders online. But visiting the cafes collection in the basement has a different charm. Glancing at the shelves lined with over 600 books makes it easier for members wanting to browse through all the titles. Non-members,still unsure about investing in the service, are given cane mats to lounge before making a choice.
In time, the cafe hopes to be a space for patrons looking to explore graphic novels, comics and Manga in more detail. Were planning to host events, discussions and workshops in the space, says Utsa Shome, one of the three founders of Leaping Windows. We will also sell books by local artists, she adds.
