Four educational institutions from Mumbai have secured spots in the top ten ranks across various categories in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, announced on Thursday. These include the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai, Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), and Homi Bhabha National Institute.

IIT Bombay has retained its 3rd rank in the Overall category, while also ranking 3rd in Engineering, 4th in Research, 14th in Management, and 2nd in Innovation. While the institute has maintained its positions in the Overall and Research categories compared to NIRF 2024, it has seen a decline in the Management and Innovation categories—dropping from 10th to 14th in Management and from 1st to 2nd in Innovation.

Commenting on the performance, Director Prof. Shireesh Kedare said, “We are happy to maintain our strong performance in the NIRF Rankings. They are an important nationwide process of assessment and benchmarking. The competition among institutions is healthy, as it encourages us to raise our standards and contribute more effectively to the nation’s growth.”

IIM Mumbai, formerly known as NITIE, has retained its 6th rank in the Management category. Director Prof. Manoj Kumar Tiwari, who led the institute into the top 10 for the first time in 2022, said, “This recognition reflects the dedication of our faculty, students, staff, alumni, and partners. While rankings provide external validation, our true focus remains on nurturing responsible leaders, advancing cutting-edge research, and contributing to India’s growth story.”

ICT Mumbai continues its eight-year streak in the top 10 of the Pharmacy category, though it has slipped to 6th rank after holding 5th place for the past three years. Prof. Shrirang Joshi, former Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology, said, “This is a slight aberration. Minor fluctuations in evaluation parameters often lead to such changes.”

Homi Bhabha National Institute, which made a major leap from 15th to 6th in the Research category last year, now ranks 7th in the same category.

Among other prominent Mumbai-based institutions, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) saw a significant drop in rankings. In the Overall category, it moved from 98th in 2024 to the 101-150 bracket in 2025. In the University category, it fell to 72nd, down from 58th last year.

Reflecting a steady improvement in its NIRF ranking, Mumbai University has re-entered the top 100 in the Overall category, ranking 92nd, after slipping below 100 last year. In the University category, it has climbed to 54th from 61st in 2024. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ravindra Kulkarni attributed this progress to sustained efforts in teaching, graduation outcomes, outreach, and research support. “Over the past five years, the University of Mumbai has shown consistent improvement in its overall and university-specific rankings in the NIRF rankings. To further improve its rankings, the university has developed comprehensive plans such as effective implementation of UDRF – which is department level ranking, provision of substantial funding for research, and incentives for faculty to publish research,” he said.
