Deepika Padukone’s 8-hour workday demand shouldn’t be news, says Haq director: ‘Existed for decades now’

Suparn Varma said that actors demanding limited work hours is not new, and should not be making news as he spoke about Deepika Padukone.

Deepika Padukone will be next seen in Shah Rukh Khan's King.Deepika Padukone raised her concerns about excessive work-hour shifts.

When Deepika Padukone recently demanded an 8-hour workday on a film set, it raised eyebrows. So much so that almost everyone in the Hindi film industry has since spoken about the issue. While some have said that they don’t look at the clock while they are shooting, and neither does their crew, others, like Deepika, have pointed out that the demand for limited work hours is common practice while negotiating a contract. Recently, Haq director Suparn Varma also weighed in on the same and said that this practice of actors making demands before signing a film has been in existence for decades now and it is during the negotiation stage that the actors and producers often agree upon the work hours, entourage and other paraphernalia that an actor needs. He said that if he were to work with Deepika, and if on a particular day, he needed more time from her, he would make that request well in advance. He added that actors often make such kind of concessions when asked.

In a chat shared on Cyrus Says’ YouTube channel, Suparn shared, “This has existed for decades now. Actors are signed on with a contract, when they are paid, and they have their list of demands. Whether it’s 10 vanity vans or 1, if it is 2 people with them or 3, how long will their work hours be, will they shoot night shifts or day shifts, shoot on Sundays or not? It is all codified, so when an actor does that today, it should not be news.”

When asked if Suparn was to work with Deepika and needed some extra time from her, the director gave a clear answer. He said, “Then that particular day, I will request her. Every actor gives a concession. I have had actors who, in their contract, have 10 hours that includes make-up, lunch and shoot time, which is technically 8 hours of shoot, and you work your schedule around that. You plan around it, and that’s how it works. It’s no big deal.” Suparn said that these kinds of adjustments in schedules are quite common and the makers often keep the actors’ hours in mind when planning the film, and the actor too, adjusts if the film needs it.

He added, “So if Deepika is working with me, and she says these are the hours that she is giving me and someday, I need more time, she will know it in advance. She will plan her life accordingly, that these 2-3 days Suparn needs extra time, rest of the days, he is working on my schedule.” He then joked with Cyrus and said, “So we have to crack more jokes, make her laugh so she says yes. Hasee to phasee right?” Suparn’s latest film Haq starred Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi.

Deepika’s 8-hour demand came to light after she stepped out of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit. The actor then parted ways with Nag Ashwin for the sequel of Kalki 2898 AD.
