Women SHGs to get fair price shops
Women self-help groups (SHGs) will now be given preference in allotment of fair price shops. As many as 5,500 cancelled shops are yet to be renewed. In all these shops,SHGs will be given the first preference. The process will begin immediately, said Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anil Deshmukh. He also said the Centre had approved additional stock of wheat and rice for APL card holders so that they could receive 15 kg of grains.
Environment status reports mandatory
The government has made it mandatory for civic bodies to prepare environment status reports. A Cabinet subcommittee,headed by the Revenue Minister,will monitor the implementation of suggestions in these reports. Its mandate will be to clear hurdles,if any,in the implementation of the line of action and suggestions, said Environment Minister Suresh Shetty. District-level environment committees have also been proposed to prepare vision documents.
New arms policy announced
The state government on Friday announced a new arms policy,seeking to empower the police force with modern weaponry. Home Minister RR Patil had formulated a similar policy after the 26/11 attacks,which has been revised now. Police forces across the state will be armed with sophisticated pistols,rifles,rocket launchers,light machine guns,sniper rifles etc. Some weaponry will also have to be imported; the government has sought funds from the Centre, Patil said.
