In a move aimed at improving the facilities and quality of public toilets, BJP minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha has written a letter to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demanding relook at the contract mechanism for public toilets.

In the letter to BMC commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, he underlined, long term contract was proving a failure. “The 30-year contract system of the BMC for toilets is extremely restrictive, depriving citizens of adequate facilities. This contract should be cancelled and a new process implemented,” said Lodha, Minister for Skill Development, Employment, Entrepreneurship & Innovation and Guardian Minister of Mumbai suburban district.

Lodha also cited how several citizens complained on this issue during the Janata Darbar (public grievance hearing) organised in the F/North ward of the Corporation. MLA Prasad Lad and Captain Tamil Selvan were also present on the occasion.

Earlier, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had instructed cabinet members to interact directly with the public to resolve their issues. Accordingly, Lodha has been organizing ward-wise Janata Darbars to understand citizens’ difficulties.

As part of this initiative, in the Janata Darbar organized in the F/North ward of the Sion-Koliwada constituency, citizens listed several problems related to toilets. They stated that due to the 30-year contract, contractors are running the toilets arbitrarily, without providing proper facilities. They complained about leaking roofs, hygiene issues, broken doors, and lack of lighting in many locations.

Minister Lodha took note of the grievances and instructed assistant municipal commissioner Arun Kshirsagar, who was present, to take action.
