IMD upgrades alert to orange for 4 dists; moderate rain likely in Mumbai today

According to the IMD, Palghar recorded 93 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours, while Thane recorded 148.6 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Thursday.

The India Meteorology Department (IMD) on Thursday upgraded the yellow alert to orange alert for Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts of Maharashtra, as moderate to heavy rainfall continued to batter several districts of Maharashtra.

While the overall quantum of rainfall recorded in Mumbai was much lesser, pockets in the suburban belt recorded three digit figures of rainfall.

According to the IMD, Palghar recorded 93 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours, while Thane recorded 148.6 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Thursday.

During this period, Chiplun in Ratnagiri recorded 92.5 mm rainfall, while Awalegaon in Sindhudurg recorded 80.5 mm of rain.

Meanwhile, during the same period on Thursday, Dahisar in the western suburbs of Mumbai recorded 140 mm of rains, while Borivali recorded 133 mm and Malad (Malwani) recorded 126 mm. In eastern suburbs, 48 mm was recorded in Vikhroli, while in the island city 36.6 mm was recorded in Sion.

Also, throughout the day, the maximum  city remained covered under thick cloud cover.

Sushma Nair, scientist from IMD, Mumbai said that on Friday, the intensity of rainfall may slightly recede.

“We have not kept any alert for Mumbai on Friday, as there is a chance of light to moderate rainfall over the city and suburbs. However, the Thane, Palghar, Raigad districts may record more rainfall than Mumbai due to presence of westerly conditions,” Nair told The Indian Express.

Meanwhile, the BMC’s disaster cell report state that total 15 tree and branches collapse incident was reported Thursday , followed by four cases of short circuit and partial collapse of building and house collapse.

No injury was reported in any of these incidents.
