IMD predicts cooler days ahead as night temperature drops by 3.7°C

Weather officials attributed the rise in mercury to the effects of Cyclone Fengal which had developed over the eastern and south eastern coast, leading to significant rainfall in the southern and eastern part of the country.

After recording a significant rise in the minimum temperature, Mumbai’s night temperature dropped by a massive 3.7 degrees on Saturday.

The India Meteorology Department’s (IMD) Santacruz observatory recorded 20.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday night, which was 1.9 degrees above the normal. On Friday, the minimum temperature at night stood at 24.4 degrees Celsius.

Throughout last week, Mumbai’s minimum temperature was on the higher side. Between December 4 and 5, Mumbai’s minimum temperatures stood at 25 degrees Celsius, which was nearly seven degrees above normal.

Weather officials attributed the rise in mercury to the effects of Cyclone Fengal which had developed over the eastern and south eastern coast, leading to significant rainfall in the southern and eastern part of the country.

“Now that the effects of the cyclone are slowly receding, the temperature may see a marginal dip in the days to come. Starting December 9-10, the minimum temperature may drop to 18 degrees Celsius or below. Earlier, the temperatures saw a rise owing to low pressure that had developed due to Cyclone Fengal. The low pressure had also increased humidity,” said a weather official.

Over the past few weeks, Mumbai also recorded multiple cases of extreme temperatures. On November 29, Mumbai recorded a minimum temperature of 16.5 degrees which is the lowest in eight years. Later, within a week on December 4, the megapolis recorded a maximum temperature of 37.3 degrees, making it the warmest December day in 16 years.
