IMD predicts light to moderate showers for Mumbai from Thursday

Owing to absense of heavy showers, data shows that the island city division is currently reeling under a rain deficit of 46mm while the suburban station has clocked in 92mm deficit.

As Mumbai witnessed hardly any rain on Tuesday despite a yellow alert sounded over the past few days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued no warning for the city and its neighbouring districts starting Thursday, stating the likelihood of only light to moderate showers in the coming days.

Amid active weather systems in the region, the IMD had forecast resurgence of monsoon activity over the weekend with a yellow warning for Mumbai as well as its neighbouring districts, such as Thane and Palghar, until Tuesday morning. However, the forecast fell flat as the city continued to experience intermittent spells of light to moderate showers throughout Monday.

Data from the weather bureau showed that between Monday and Tuesday morning, the Colaba coastal observatory received only 0.2 mm rain while the Santacruz observatory in suburbs registered ‘trace’ rainfall. In meteorology, trace denotes that while the amount of downpour was greater than zero, the proportions were too little to be registered by standard units of measurement.

According to weather expert Athreya Shetty, the showers eluded Mumbai as the pull effect from a low pressure system over Andhra Pradesh, which was expected to usher in heavy downpour, remained concentrated over the northern parts of the city.

“Since the pull effect remained over the northern parts, it was districts like Palghar that experienced extremely heavy downpour. Meanwhile, Mumbai remained on the edge of the effect and therefore, experienced only brief spells of heavy rainfall,” added Shetty, an independent weather observer.

Indicating no heavy showers in the coming days, IMD issued no alerts for the city as well as Thane and Palghar after Thursday. While the weather bureau has forecast ‘heavy rainfall in isolated pockets’ on Wednesday, only light to moderate showers is on cards for the region from Thursday.
