THE state government on Wednesday admitted illegal construction was rampant in Mumbra region,near Mumbai where the shocking Thane building collapse tragedy occurred.

Minister of state for urban development Bhaskar Jadhav on Wednesday told the state assembly that water supply to Mumbra had been disrupted and rampant illegal construction was also affecting water tax collection,which stood at 37 per cent.

The issue of poor water supply in Mumbra was raised by NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad. Jadhav said,“Except for Mumbra,water tax collection in Thane Municipal Corporation is 90 per cent. Of the 15,000 water connections in Mumbra,around 5,000 are illegal.”

While seeking action against illegal connections,he said civic authorities disconnected nearly 900 water connections in the past six months.

The discussion on illegal construction was highlighted by Pratap Sarnaik of Shiv Sena.
