THE MUMBAI police Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the alleged death by suicide of IIT student Darshan Solanki is in the process of identifying a person with whom he chatted on Facebook about caste discrimination at the institute.

Darshan, originally from Ahmedabad, allegedly jumped off the eighth floor of his hostel building on the IIT-B campus in Powai on February 12 this year.

In his letter to the SIT, Darshan’s father mentioned about the IIT student’s Facebook connect, Sam Rajput. The letter said the chat on caste discrimination was discovered by his daughter while going through Darshan’s Facebook chats.

An officer said, “Based on the letter written by his father, we are trying to find out who Rajput is to record his statement in connection with the contents of the letter. We will also record the statement again of Uday Singh Meena in whom Darshan is said to have confided about caste discrimination faced by him.”

While the police have arrested Solanki’s batchmate Arman Kohli based on the purported suicide note left behind by Darshan, the family is not convinced and believes that it was caste discrimination at the institute that led to his death.

An officer said that they are awaiting cloned copies of the WhatsApp chats from Darshan’s phone. “While we have received a cloned copy of his laptop, nothing important was found in it. Police have got chats between Solanki and Khatri in which the former told Khatri that he was going to leave the city and go to his hometown,” the officer said.

The officer, however, added that they are hopeful that the mobile chats of Darshan with others would shed more light on what was troubling him.
