IIT Bombay to offer skill-oriented courses for industry people
IIT-B director professor Shireesh Kedare shared details about the extensive outreach programme on Wednesday, while addressing the media on National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) results that were declared on Monday.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay will soon offer a series of skill-oriented online Post Graduate (PG) Diploma and Masters courses for industry professionals.
IIT-B director professor Shireesh Kedare shared details about the extensive outreach programme on Wednesday, while addressing the media on National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) results that were declared on Monday.
Even as the institute improved its position to third in Overall category from fourth last year, the administration believes that more targeted efforts for improved educational outreach programs will further boost the NIRF performance.
According to Kedare, the first course to be offered in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) is expected to start from September, while a few others in areas such as electrical vehicles, entrepreneurship, etc., are in the pipeline.
Prof Milind Atrey, deputy director (Academic and Infrastructural Affairs), who was present for the media interaction, said, “It is Outreach 2.0 for the IIT-Bombay where the focus is on industry. The institute has already created a new position of dean for educational outreach for more focused efforts toward this. Additionally, we have appointed a professional full time CEO for this department for effective implementation of plans.”
The professors pointed out how IIT Madras, which ranks first in NIRF ranking, has done better in the aspect of educational outreach with more such programmes on offer.
Apart from industry executives, such courses will be open for teachers from other colleges or those who have not been able to get admission in IIT-Bombay and aspire to pursue certain courses there.
Professor Krishna Kaliappan, Dean Strategy, added that the institute already has recorded lectures from the pandemic times and more steps will be taken to generate resources. “The institute has tied up with ed-tech platforms too in order to facilitate effective conducting of these online courses, including exams and assessments,” he said.
Apart from educational outreach, the institute is also working toward enhancing student teacher ratio. Prof Kaliappan said, “The ideal student teacher ratio is expected to be 15:1, whereas at IIT-Bombay we are currently running at 18:1. We are continuously evolving and taking efforts to create more positions with external funding, financial support from industry in the form of consultancy projects.”
