Mumbai experienced a marked drop in the humidity levels on Tuesday but above average temperatures in the city as well as the suburbs kept citizens breaking into a sweat.

Colaba recorded maximum temperature of 35.4°C and Santacruz 37.8°C on Tuesday morning, however, there was a steep drop in the humidity — 49 per cent and 29 per cent respectively. Minimum temperatures also remained high at 26.6°C and 26°C in the city and suburbs.

Dr R V Sharma, deputy director general of IMD Mumbai, said,“For the past few days, high winds of over 10-12 knots were bringing in warm air into the region. Now there seems to be a slight deviation occurring in that pattern. The wind speed seems to be slowing down. The temperatures will hover around 38 degree Celsius, but not exceed 40 over the next few days.”

According to Sharma, north to north easterly winds prevail at this time of the year. These are warm, land bound winds, and when the current is strong, carry hot air with them. Moisture,on the other hand,is brought in with seaward north-westerly winds. “Usually, the easterly winds prevail through the mornings, and as the day progresses, westerlies become stronger. Cooling occurs at night,” Sharma explained.

Meanwhile, the highest maximum temperature Mumbai ever recorded in the month of April was 42.2°C on April 14,1952. This year, the city reached close,at 40.6 degrees Celsius on April 1,the highest in 57 years. IMD officials predicted partly cloudy skies and temperatures around 37 degrees Celsius till Thursday.
