Nearly a week into the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), the first case of cheating at the exam hall in Mumbai division was reported on Monday. According to sources, a dummy candidate was caught appearing for Physics exam at a centre in Nalasopara during the day. On instructions of the state board, the exam centre has filed an FIR with Pelhar police station.

The issue came to light during a surprise visit of anti-copying flying squads of the board at the Om Sai Junior College in Nalasopara. Chairman of Mumbai division of the board, Rajendra Ahire, said, “Flying squads select random exam centres to pay visits. During one such visit on Monday, flying-squad members spotted a dummy candidate appearing for Physics paper held in the morning session. It was detected during an impromptu hall-ticket verification by the members of the flying-squad.”

When asked whether there was any prior information regarding the misconduct which led to such a verification process, Ahire said, “This particular junior college was not even among those identified as sensitive exam centres. It was a random surprise visit by the flying-squad to this centre and such visits do include hall-ticket verification.”

After the incident was reported to Maharashtra State Board, the exam centre was instructed to lodge a police complaint as per the prescribed procedure. Ahire said, “There will be an independent inquiry by the state board too.”

As per the procedure, a dummy candidate is subjected to punishment by law whereas the student is barred from appearing for board exam for the next three years. In case of any fault found in the exam centre, its approval as exam-centre will be revoked.

This year, Maharashtra State Board launched a massive campaign against copying during board exams. The state government too issued stringent guidelines against copying under the campaign titled ‘Copy-Free-Exam’. Despite strict measures, copy cases are reported almost every day. But this is first copy case reported in Mumbai division during the ongoing HSC examination.
