How 13 cars punctured their tyres on Samruddhi Mahamarg in one night
The incident happened near chainage number 223 on the Nagpur corridor of Samruddhi Mahamarg, also called Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway.

A mishap on Samruddhi Mahamarg (Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway) on Sunday night left several car passengers stranded after 13 vehicles experienced sudden tyre punctures. At 8.28 pm, the Samruddhi Mahamarg control room received reports of tyre punctures near chainage number 223 on the Nagpur corridor.
In response, police personnel moved to the site. Upon arrival, it was discovered that a heavy iron plate had fallen from a trailer with registration number NL 01 AE 7143 onto the road. As vehicles passed over the plate at high speed, its sharp edges punctured the tyres of 13 cars.
Anil Kumar Gaikwad, vice chairman and managing director of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which is responsible for Samruddhi Mahamarg upkeep and maintenance, confirmed the incident.
As per the MSRDC, the state highway police acted quickly, diverting the affected vehicles to the roadside, ensuring the safety of the passengers, and providing the people with water.
The team then contacted officials in Malegaon for assistance. However, the iron plate’s weight made it impossible for bystanders to lift it. A hydraulic crane was eventually brought from the Malegaon toll booth to move the plate off the road.
The incident caused considerable frustration among the affected car owners, some of whom attempted to set the trailer on fire in anger. A police team defused the situation, advising the owners to file reports at the local police station.
The trailer was later taken into custody for further investigation. The operation, which started at 8.45 pm on Sunday, concluded at 2 am on Monday. The highway police ensured that the road was cleared, and normal traffic resumed shortly thereafter, as per the MSRDC.
