A day after Nidhi Gupta,a Chartered Accountant and a guest lecturer at a city college, jumped off the 19th floor of the Sahyadri building in Malad east after throwing her two children Gaurav and Mayanka down, her father,Bimal Jalan, told mediapersons at the Dindoshi police station that his daughter had been facing mental harassment in her marital home and that he was determined to make a formal complaint to that effect with the police.
Jalan,a businessman residing in Worli, said: My daughter was being harassed by her husband and in-laws and this had been going on for several years. The claims made by them (the in-laws) that there were no problems are false. Nidhi was not allowed to do anything in the house or take any decisions. She was dominated by her sister-in-law,Sunita,who owned the house.
Jalan, however, did not specify the details or the reason behind the alleged harassment and left without giving a formal statement to the police as he developed low blood sugar problems.
Additional Commissioner of Police (North) Ramrao Pawar said,Jalan has not yet given a formal statement to the investigators about the harassment he alleges his daughter suffered at the instance of her in-laws. We could not talk to him in detail on the day of the incident as he was in a state of shock. Once he makes a statement to that effect,we shall see what action has to be taken.
The police officers are still in the process of taking down the statements of the Gupta family members, but claim they have not managed to conduct a thorough questioning as they are in a state of shock.
