Help ‘jumps’ to death from highrise

Police call it a case of suicide,kin allege foul play.

An 18-year-old woman employed as a domestic help at the home of a diamond merchant allegedly fell to her death from the 23rd floor of Maker Towers-A in Cuffe Parade on Thursday morning. While the police say she committed suicide,her family allege foul play,blaming her employers for the death.

According to the police,Chanda Pawar had been employed as a full-time help for the past year-and-a-half at the home of Yogesh Bulchandani,who owns Dynamic Corporation and is the director of investment firm Vyomesh Investment and Trading Company Pvt Ltd.

Chanda lived with her family in the Ambedkar Nagar slum colony in Cuffe Parade. Her family said she was being paid Rs 10,000 a month to stay with the Bulchandanis,do household chores and look after their child. She had been given a room in the Bulchandani residence.

At 12.40 am on Thursday,a taxi driver who had parked his vehicle outside the building saw Chanda fall off the 23rd floor,on to the parapet on the ground floor,before landing on the ground.

“He immediately informed the police,who rushed Chanda to G T Hospital,where she was declared dead. We informed the Bulchandanis and got in touch with Chanda’s family,” said Padmakar Juikar,Assistant Commissioner of Police,Colaba Division. An accidental death report has been registered at the Cuffe Parade police station.

According to the post-mortem,Chanda died of ‘shock and haemorrhage due to multiple injuries (unnatural)’. The doctors have kept their final opinion pending.

Chanda’s family alleged that the Bulchandanis killed Chanda after she told them she wanted to quit. “Chanda came home only for a few days every month. On Wednesday,I told her to quit her job and find another where she could return home. She told me later that night that her employers were willing to pay her more but did not want her to leave. She told them that she could work for them for eight hours a day and return home,but they refused,” alleged Chanda’s sister Balma.

She said Chanda had never complained of abuse by the Bulchandanis. “I know there is something wrong,and that her employers are involved in this,” she alleged.

A mob,including Chanda’s family,stormed the apartment complex on Thursday evening,demanding to meet the Bulchandanis. They were initially restrained by private security guards,but forced their way through. Later,the police coaxed them to leave. Balma accompanied by the police went upstairs to meet the Bulchandanis.

“Yogesh Bulchandani said the family members had been asleep in their rooms at the time of the incident and do not know why she jumped,” said Juikar.

The Bulchandanis were not available for comment.

Sr citizen hangs self in Lower Parel home

MUMBAI: A 64-year-old man suffering from Parkinson’s disease allegedly hanged himself in his Lower Parel residence on Thursday afternoon. The police said he left behind a suicide note saying he was taking the extreme step as he was fed up with life.

According to the N M Joshi Marg police,Raj Bodha,a resident of Vinayak Bhavan building near Deepak theatre,used to live with his wife.

“Around 12.15 pm,Bodha’s wife stepped out to buy vegetables. When she returned,she rang the doorbell several times but received no response,after which she alerted neighbours. The door was broken open and Bodha was found hanging from the ceiling fan in the living room,” said Assistant Inspector Madhukar Chaudhari.

Chaudhari was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead before admission. The police also searched his house,and found a suicide note written in Kannada.

“Bodha had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Dadar for the last 10-12 years. Eight days ago,he had fallen in his house. He had been depressed since then,” Chaudhari said.
