Heavy rainfall expected today

Met department has now extended the heavy rainfall warning to Friday afternoon.

For the third consecutive day on Thursday,expectations of heavy rainfall in the city did not materialise with Colaba weather station recording only 4.2 mm rain from 8.30 am to 8.30 pm and the Santacruz weather station recording a negligible 1.8 mm.

Met department has now extended the heavy rainfall warning to Friday afternoon.

Since recording the highest 24-hour rainfall of the season,90.4 mm, between 8.30 am on Monday and 8.30 pm on Tuesday at Colaba and despite clouds persisting,the city has received only light rain.

Between 8.30 am Thursday and 8.30 am on Friday,Santacruz recorded only 1.8 mm of rain while Colaba fared better with 36.8 mm,most of which fell post 8.30 pm Thursday.

Sometimes the rainfall we get is not in tune with the kind of clouding observed. Many factors like intensity of clouding and clouds moving in another direction under influence of winds have to be considered as well, said VK Rajeev,Director,India Meteorological Department (IMD),Mumbai.

Meanwhile,the maximum temperature in the suburbs rose to 30.3 degrees,from 28.4 degrees the previous day.

The island city recorded a marginal increase from 28.2 degrees the previous day to 28.6 degrees.

However,intensive clouding persists and the city is expected to get heavy rainfall on Friday.

Although rainfall has been less today,satellite pictures still indicate very intensive clouding over Madhya Maharashtra,Marathwada and Konkan,although not specifically Konkan.

The patch over Madhya Maharashtra is quite strong and it already started raining in places like Aurangabad this evening. We are expecting showers late tonight(Thursday) or early tomorrow morning, said Rajeev.
