Hall to train cops inaugurated

In a first,a hall to train police personnel in evidence-gathering and crime scene investigation was inaugurated Friday.

In a first,a hall to train police personnel in evidence-gathering and crime scene investigation was inaugurated Friday. The training hall at Bawla Police Compound,Chinchpokli, has been opened in partnership with citizen sponsors and will hold special workshops on fighting work stress, most common reason for police suicides.

The training infrastructure is an initiative of additional commissioner (central region) Praveen Salunkhe.

“We found police personnel below sub-inspectors were not taking initiative in investigation. They are the first to reach crime scenes and hence investigations depend on them. In these workshops, the stress will be to ensure lower ranks are taught investigation of petty crimes,so that work is divided among ranks.”

Salunkhe, who was last posted as deputy inspector general,CBI,said,“In CBI,investigating officers only probe cases. Here,I noticed officers are so bogged down with law-and-order and other duties they are stressed at the end of the day. We are working on a plan to help reduce the stress and seperate patrolling from core investigation. This training infrastructure is the first step.”

“We will design courses to train constables to take up a major chunk of crime investigation. Vehicles stolen, small robberies, chain snatchings can see their involvement,” he said.

The first class on the schedule at the hall is lectures on pranayam and stress management. There will see be classes for 20 police stations of central region this month.
