Groundbreaking ceremony held for IIT-Bombay’s new hostel complex

This will be the first construction under Project Evergreen which has been conceptualized to represent a paradigm shift in the way the Institute will facilitate student housing.

With modern rooms, spacious courtyards, ergonomically designed study rooms and other facilities, the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay will soon see a new hostel campus having 1,100 rooms under Project Evergreen, an alumni-led initiative. Groundbreaking ceremony for this was conducted on campus on Saturday which marks commencement of construction of the project.

This hostel complex will comprise 3 hostels — Hostel 7, Hostel 8, and a women’s Hostel 21 — and shall be constructed on the grounds of erstwhile Hostel 8. This will be the first construction under Project Evergreen which has been conceptualized to represent a paradigm shift in the way the Institute will facilitate student housing.

As the student population on Powai campus of this premiere technology institute has increased from 3,000 to more than 13,000 in past two decades, “the institute is on a mission to revamp its hostel infrastructure on campus and provide its students with boarding and lodging facilities, comparable with those at similar institutions worldwide,” states the note issued by the institute on Saturday adding that Project

Evergreen is a unique partnership between IIT-Bombay and its two alumni organizations – IITB Alumni Association (IITBAA) and IITB Heritage Foundation (IITBHF) in US – to fund, design and build this “world-class hostel complex.” With the fundraising target of Rs.150 crore (US$20 million), the institute is looking forward to donations from the supporters to propel Project Evergreen.

In a statement issued by the institute, Director of IIT-Bombay, Prof Subhasis Chaudhuri, said, “This visionary project marks a significant milestone in IIT-Bombay’s journey towards providing top-notch living facilities for our growing student community.
