The decision was taken by Food and Civil Supplies department headed by Chhagan Bhujbal on Monday. (File Photo) The state government has taken a decision to procure paddy and coarse grains/cereals at minimum support price from the farmers under the Centre’s scheme for 2023-24.
Under the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), the state government is allowed to procure coarse grains from farmers at MSP. The process under central pool is subjected to prior approval from the Centre in consultation with Food Corporation of India. All the procurement details such as quantity is distributed to targeted public distribution systems and other welfare schemes.
The decision was taken by Food and Civil Supplies department headed by Chhagan Bhujbal on Monday.
Under this scheme, MSP for paddy is Rs 2,183 to Rs 2,203 per quintal based on grade. The MSP for Jowar varies from Rs 3,180 to 3,225 per quintal; Bajri Rs 2,500 per quintal; Maize Rs 2,090 per quintal; Ragi Rs 3,846/quintal.
The period for paddy procurement is November 9, 2023 to January 31, 2024. Whereas, coarse grain procurement period is from December 1, 2023 to January 31, 2024.
The procurement of paddy and coarse grains is to ensure the farmers don’t have to do distress sale of kharif harvest.
The procurement is undertaken to ensure farmers fetch MSP.
The state government has decided to set up control centres across the state to monitor the procurement process. The purpose is to check exploitation of farmers by traders and private companies which often procure the crops from farmers at rates below MSP.
The Centre’s nodal agency Food Corporation of India will oversee and monitor the procurement of paddy/coarse grains.
