Days after criticism from its former students including senior lawyers and a former judge, Government Law College (GLC) has withdrawn its notice from last month related to social media channel “GLC Law and Lore”.

GLC principal Dr Asmita Vaidya, in a letter dated August 6 to the team running the social media channel, stated that the Governing Council of the college has asked her “to convey its no objection to the continuation of the podcast”.

Moreover the Governing Council has asked the principal to request the team “to add an appropriate line to the effect that the podcast is an alumni initiative and not an official podcast of the Government Law College”.

As per its description on YouTube, GLC Law and Lore  is “an alumni-led initiative intending to bridge the gap between legal education and real-world practice by connecting current students, alumni, faculty, and prospective students of GLC”.

The earlier notice dated July 31 drew strong criticism from several alumni including that from former Bombay High Court judge and GLC alumnus Justice Gautam Patel.

The GLC principal said the college has withdrawn a public notice issued by it last month. The College had disassociated itself from the social media channel GLC Law and Lore and demanded the immediate removal of GLC from its name.

The earlier notice had also stated that any content published by GLC Law and Lore “does not reflect the views, policies, or official stance of GLC” and warned students that any continued misuse of the institution’s name may compel the college to consider further appropriate action.

The August 6 communication stated that the Governing Council of the GLC considered the earlier public notice and heard the response of the team running the social media channel to the same and that members of the Governing Council had watched the past podcasts.

“On consideration of the issue, the Governing Council has asked me to convey its no objection to the continuation of the podcast. The Governing Council has asked me to request you to add an appropriate line to the effect that the podcast is an alumni initiative and not an official podcast of the Government Law College. In light of the aforesaid, the public notice dated 16th July 2025 stands withdrawn,” Dr Vaidya, in her communication, stated.

Justice (Retired) Patel in his August 1 letter to the Principal had said that the notice was “entirely unjustified and, from any perspective, unacceptably mean spirited, inconsiderate, humiliating and unkind.”

Justice Patel is an alumnus and also former head of the college’s governing Council.

He had added, “GLC was ours, long, long before you. And it will survive you as it has survived others.”
