Unassuming Sunil Ghadge was the star in Central Railway Institute A’ s surprise 656-632 win over Yasin Merchant-led Khar Gymkhana ‘B’ to enter the quarter-final of the Michael Ferreira Mumbai Billiards League knock-out tournament,held at the PJ Hindu Gymkhana here on Tuesday.

International star and twice Asian snooker champion Merchant,playing with -50 handicap,gave Khar Gymkhana a flying start,leaving his opponent Joseph Thomas (plus 90) high and dry before winning 200-34 with breaks of 65 and 46.

Then Manoj Kasare (plus 80) got the better of junior Ghadge (plus 100) 200-152. At this stage,Khar Gymkhana needed 156 points to pip the Railway outfit. But the all-important decider brought the best in Ghadge as he played consistently well,notching up small breaks to pip Deepak Khubchandani 200-132.

Results: Bombay Gym bt Cricket Club of India 584-477 (Aditya Agarwal (+35) bt J.Dingra (+85) 200-76; R.Kumar (+55) bt Devendra Shah (+100) 200-81; Kaizad Fitter (+70) bt Raj MKhandwalla (+100) 84-35.)

Central Railway Mechanical Institute ‘A’ bt Khar Gymkhana ‘B’ 656-632 (Joseph Thomas (+90) lost toYasin Merchant (-50) 34-200; N Ghadge (+100) lost to Manoj Kasare (+80) 152-200; Sunil Ghadge (+80) bt Deepak Khubchandani (+70) 200-132.
