The Mumbai crime branch Tuesday arrested Kamal Rajput (52), the younger brother of Kailash Rajput alias K R, who is pegged to be one of the biggest narcotics suppliers to India and alleged to be linked to fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim.

As per the police, Kamal, who allegedly handles his brother’s operations in the country, was involved in a case of ketamine being sent to Australia and the UK by hiding it in an airplane cargo which was busted in March by the Anti Extortion Cell (AEC) of the Mumbai crime branch.

He is the ninth arrest in the case after one Ali Asgar Shirazi’s arrest in May. The Mumbai police crime branch had issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) to ensure Kamal does not flee the country.

A senior officer said, “Based on human intelligence, we traced down and arrested Kamal Rajput from Palghar in connection with the ketamine case. He was produced before a court and remanded to police custody till September 30.”

The officer said Kamal, who was named as a wanted accused in the international ketamine smuggling racket, handled his brother Kailash’s activities in India as there is a Red Corner Notice (RCN) issued against Kailash due to which he cannot come to the country. This is the first time Kamal has been named in an offence and arrested, the officer added.

The officer further said, “This is a big breakthrough for us in terms of ensuring that we get Kailash Rajput back to the country, who is an international narcotics dealer and one of the biggest suppliers to India.”

Kailash, who has eluded Indian law enforcement agencies since the past few years, was suspected to be holed up in the UK a few years back.

In a raid conducted by the crime branch at a unit in Andheri on March 15, the police seized 15.74 kg of ketamine worth Rs 7.87 crore and over 23,000 strips of Viagra tablets worth Rs 58 lakh and arrested two persons. Later, seven more persons, including security agents working at Airport cargo, were arrested in the case for allowing narcotics to pass through.

The crime branch had found that in the six months preceding the arrests in the case made in March 15, there were nearly 72 instances when such contraband is believed to have been sent abroad.

Shirazi and Kailash were last apprehended by the Customs in 2013 during a seizure of 50 kg of meth and ketamine. However, after obtaining bail in 2014, they managed to flee to the UAE initially and then later to Europe. It is believed that Kailash has been shuttling between Europe and the UAE ever since. Rajput is believed to be working closely with Anees Ibrahim, the younger brother of Dawood Ibrahim.

Apart from Mumbai police, Kailash is wanted by the Anti-Narcotics Cell, the Special Cell of the Delhi police, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in various cases.
