Frisking at pandals, mufti cops at visarjan points

Top police officers held a security review meeting after Wednesday’s blast in Delhi.

Top police officers held a security review meeting after Wednesday’s blast in Delhi. Home Minister R R Patil announced that two-wheelers will not be allowed on major visarjan routes in the city, such as the one followed by Lalbaugcha Raja.

“I have asked all officers to remain alert at all times. There is heavy deployment on roads as well. Checking and nakabandis will be increased,” said Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik.

Speaking about the security arrangements for Ganesha pandals,Patnaik said,“We will frisk people who come to the pandals and have asked our officers to check suspicious persons. Security will remain high at pandals.”

Ahead of Ganpati immersions,Patnaik said the police will ensure a heightened state of vigil at all times. “We had a meeting about immersions as well. Extra officers have been deployed. Immersion points see a huge turnout and it is difficult for our officers to keep an eye on everyone. Our men will be present in plain clothes and will walk with the devotees so that we are able to identify anti-social elements fast,” said Patnaik.

Various arms of the police will also be deployed during the course of the next few days. “The Rapid Action Force,State Reserve Police Force and officers from local police stations have been deployed. The Quick Response Team, which is trained to retaliate in the event of a strike, has also been put on standby,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Rajnish Seth.

Meanwhile,a spokesperson from the Department of Atomic Energy said: “Whenever such an unfortunate incident (blast in Delhi) takes place,we take stock of the situation and ensure that security remains tight.”
