Four new gharials shifted to display gallery at Mumbai zoo
On June 17, the four new gharials were shifted to the display gallery for public viewing. With their arrival, the total tally of gharials at the Byculla zoo has risen to six.

Four new gharials have been introduced into the viewing gallery at Mumbai’s Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Vanaspati Udyan and Zoo following an animal exchange programme with the Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park in Ranchi. Aged between six to eight years, the four gharials were traded in exchange of eight cockatiel birds from the Byculla zoo.
According to officials, the four gharials–all aged between six and eight–were received from the Ranchi Zoo on May 10. They were transported through trucks, in a journey which spanned over 4.5 days. Upon their arrival, the reptiles were kept in quarantine at the Byculla zoo for a period of over a month.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Abhishek Satam, a biologist at the Byculla zoo said the four new animals were traded in exchange for eight cockatiel birds from Mumbai zoo–which encompassed four white cockatiels and four grey cockatiels.
The underwater reptile-viewing gallery, which houses the gharials and crocodiles, is among the newest exhibit which was launched in 2023. Touted as Asia’s first zoo to have a crocodile viewing gallery, the facility spans over 4,200 square metres and enables visitors to observe the underwater movement of reptiles through the glass.
