Four months after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished 19 shops, including the famous ‘M M Mithaiwala’ and ‘Delhi Sweets’ for a road widening project at Malad’s Anand Road, the civic body announced on Saturday that the stretch of road is all set for use.

Situated outside the Malad railway station in the western suburbs, the expanded road is slated to be opened for public use starting Monday.

The opening of the road, civic officials said, will bring much relief to the pedestrians and vehicular traffic. Anand Road, which passes adjoining the western side of the railway station, is a primary link that caters to BEST buses and vehicles heading to and fro, from the station.

Meanwhile, the Malad station area records a daily footfall of 1.2 lakh and serves as a hub of the fisherfolk and jewellers.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of P/North ward which comprises Malad, said, “The total length of Anand Road is 650 metres, out of which the construction of road, Storm Water Drain (SWD) and footpath has been carried out at the ward level on the 60 metres of affected portion.”

“As a result of this widening work, traffic load in Malad West area will certainly be reduced, bringing much ease to commuters and travellers,” added Dighavkar.

Following the widening works, the road which operated earlier as a one-way route, has now been transformed into a two-way street. “One lane of 6 m has been converted into 3 lanes with 18 m”, senior civic officials told the Express.
