A special Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) court on Monday convicted and sentenced four persons to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for smuggling 40 kg of charas into the city.
Of the six accused tried,Special NDPS judge I M Bohari convicted Abdul Rehman (65),Bandu alias Bunty Undanshive (45),Mohammad Afzal Qureshi (34) and Zakir Hussain Sayyed (30),and acquitted Sandeep Devkule and Imtiaz Ali Khan for lack of evidence. The court imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh each on the four convicted.
According to the prosecution,on March 3,2010,Rehman,the main dealer from Kashmir,along with five others entered Mumbai in Undanshives Honda City. Following intelligence inputs,a team from the Mumbai Polices Anti-Narcotics Cell had already reached the spot on the Jogeshwari-Andheri Link Road where the accused were allegedly planning to hand over the drug to a dealer. All the accused were arrested at the spot.
The police seized the consignment along with the car. On sending the samples to the forensic laboratory,it was established that the consignment contained charas balls. In all,seven witnesses were examined in the case, said public prosecutor Kiran Raikar. All the six have been behind bars since arrest.
