Former mayor Shubha Raul back in Shiv Sena after brief stay in MNS

Sena had not debarred the former mayor even after she joined the MNS.

After a brief stint with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), former mayor and corporator Shubha Raul has come back to the Shiv Sena.

Raul met Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray at his residence Matoshree on Wednesday and urged him to formally induct her into the party again.

Just before the state Assembly polls in October last year, Raul had rebelled against her party and contested the polls on an MNS ticket, which she lost. Thereafter, confusion prevailed over Raul’s affiliation to the party as she continued to attend the BMC’s general body meetings as a Sena corporator. Raul is also a member of key decision-making committees in the BMC such as the Improvements Committee and Health Committee.

“Even though I contested in the Assembly elections on an MNS ticket, I never resigned as a Sena member from the municipal corporation. I was firm on joining the Sena again, but couldn’t meet him (Uddhav Thackeray) in the last two months because of some reasons,” Raul said after meeting the Sena chief. “This is a homecoming for me. I had not quit the Shiv Sena because of problems with the leadership. There were other issues with local activists,” she said.

Raul has been a three-time corporator and served as Mumbai’s mayor between 2007-09.

A corporator from the R/North ward (which includes Dahisar), Raul fought for the Dahisar Assembly seat against Sena’s Vinod Ghosalkar and BJP’s Manisha Chaudhary. The BJP candidate defeated Ghosalkar with more than 75,000 votes.

Sena had not debarred the former mayor even after she joined the MNS.

A civic official said, “Until a corporator resigns, he or she will continue to remain a member of the same political party even if the party wants to debar her.”
