Former employees likely to challenge termination

In January, the hospital authorities had terminated 600 employees citing a ‘total revamp’ of the hospital

Upset over what they termed as non-productive discussions over the past three weeks, employees of the Hurkisondas Hospital are now contemplating moving court against hospital authorities for being terminated from work before the hospital is renovated.

Three weeks after their termination,600 odd hospital employees have been trying to reach a middle ground with the management.

“We have been trying to discuss with the authorities to give us alternative job options. Many of us are sole bread earners of our families and if the management doesn’t provide us with a work option,we will be forced to take legal action,” hospital union member Ravindra Virlekar from Akhil Mumbai Rugnalay Karmachari Sangh said.

Employees from all four hospital unions have demanded a renewal of their five-year job contract, which would imply an increase in their wages.

“Our contract expired in July after which the management did not renew it. For the past six months we have been taking salaries of the expired contract,” said Virlekar.

In the first week of January, the hospital authorities had terminated all the employees citing a ‘total revamp’ of the hospital.

The hospital management, however, has denied the possibility of the situation becoming a legal issue.
