THE MUMBAI police Sunday registered an FIR against Anant Garje, personal assistant (PA) of Maharashtra Environment Minister Pankaja Munde, on charges of abetment to suicide after his wife allegedly died by suicide at their Worli residence on Saturday.

The FIR was registered based on the statement given by the father of the deceased Dr Gauri Palve (28), a dentist, who was found hanging. Gauri and Anant got married in Beed in February this year.

According to the FIR lodged by her father, Ashok Palve, Gauri was subjected to frequent quarrels and mental harassment after the marriage. He said that on October 3, his daughter sent him several photographs on WhatsApp, which indicated that the husband was in relationship with another woman. When she confronted her husband, he asked her to do whatever she wanted and threatened her saying he would commit suicide, putting the blame on her.

She alleged that even her brother-in-law and his wife knew about this relationship and threatened her that if she wanted to leave their brother, they would get him married again.

The parents said that when they recently visited the Worli residence of their daughter, they saw some injury marks on her body that she refused to explain.

According to her father, on Friday he missed two calls from her and when he called her back later, she told him everything was fine.

On Saturday evening, the father said they received a call from Anant who told them that their daughter had committed suicide, following which the family rushed to the city. She was declared dead at the Nair hospital.
Based on the father’s complaint, Worli police registered a case under abetment to suicide, husband/relatives subjecting wife to cruelty, among other sections. The family has also urged police to investigate if it was a murder.

Palve’s uncle alleged that his niece was murdered by Garje and his family members and demanded an in-camera postmortem and an investigation by CBI.

He also appealed to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his deputies Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde, seeking a detailed probe.

“Family members of the deceased woman have given us few names besides that of her husband, and we have registered a case against all of them,” an official of the Worli police station said.

State Animal Husbandry and Environment Minister Munde said police should investigate the matter and ensure there are no lapses.

“Another PA of mine received a call from Anant’s phone between 6.30 pm and 6.45 pm on Saturday. He was crying inconsolably. He told me with great distress that his wife had committed suicide. This was very shocking,” Munde said in a statement.

The minister reiterated that the police conduct a proper investigation into the matter, and that she had conveyed this to the police.

“I also spoke with Gauri Palve’s father. I can understand that he is in great sorrow. What happens in someone’s personal life is incomprehensible,” she added.
