Father,son held for stealing jewellery

A father-son duo was arrested early this week for allegedly stealing and attempting to dispose off jewellery worth Rs 8.41 lakh from the residence of a diamond merchant at Malabar Hill.

According to the police,the accused,Ranjit Yadav (19),had been working as a servant in the house of one Sanjeev Shah (43) and his wife Rupa (42). The Shah family had hired Yadav 10 days before the incident. As per the complaint filed by Rupa,on June 18 she had gone out for shopping leaving behind Yadav and another servant in the house. Yadav had left by the time she returned in the evening. However,she did not suspect anything wrong until June 20,when she discovered that jewellery worth Rs 8.41 lakh had been missing from the house. The Shahs then filed a complaint with the police on June 21.

Senior Police Inspector Iqbal Shaikh from the Malabar Hill Police station said,Though the Shah family had written Yadavs particulars in a dairy,when they checked the diary,they found that the pages containing his details had been ripped off. The family had also got Yadavs photographs clicked for verification at the time of hiring him. However,when they sent another servant to get his photographs from the shop,they discovered that Yadav had already taken them.

The police during their investigations located Yadavs relatives and enquired about Yadavs whereabouts. We nabbed Yadav in Worli. We recovered the stolen jewellery from Yadavs father,Kausal (42),and arrested both of them,who were planning to dispose off the loot to buy land in their village in Bihar, said Shaikh. Yadav has been arrested for burglary and his father for knowingly receiving stolen property. Both have been remanded to police custody for four days.
