Several Pakistani designers showcased their latest creations in the city over the weekend
She was born and brought up in Mumbai, but Ayesha Aejazs work hints at her Pakistani roots. While the embroidery is Indian, the silhouettes of my garments their length and straight fall are similar to designs from across the border, she says. The 26-year-old designer, who studied the craft at Mumbais Sophia Polytechnic, has always been influenced by Pakistan, the land of her ancestors. A case in point is her latest collection that was part of Mumbai Fashionville,a two-day event that took place at Bandras Cache gallery last weekend. My line mostly has maxi dresses,as also anarkalis paired not with churidars but with roomy salwars. The fabrics are light chiffons and jerseys, she elaborates.
Most designers have stayed true to the Pakistani roots of showing long flowy silhouettes made using chiffons, georgettes, cottons and linens, along with net and chikankari, says Anwar. One such participant was Somaya Adnan, who, along with partner Ayesha Sohail, runs the label Ayesha-Somaya. While she could not be there for the event,Adnan was nevertheless excited about her collections Indian debut. We have showcased a line of 20 long dresses in gold, bronze, nude, red, maroon and aubergine. The feedback will help us with the cocktail collections that we intend to bring down later this year, she says.
