Fadnavis’ return as Maharashtra CM to fast track mega infra projects, including Samruddhi Expressway expansion

Samruddhi Expressway expansion, regarded as Fadnavis’ pet project, is likely to be completed without the usual bureaucratic roadblocks, according to officials.

In a major boost to Maharashtra’s infrastructure ambitions, as Devendra Fadnavis resumed the role of Chief Minister of the state on Thursday, many believe that it will bring a renewed focus on acceleration of key development projects that have been in the pipeline. From the extension of the Versova-Bandra Sea Link (VBSL) to the ambitious Samruddhi Expressway expansion, Fadnavis is expected to ensure that the state’s critical infrastructure projects overcome bureaucratic hurdles and proceed smoothly.

One of the flagship projects under his watch is the extension of the Samruddhi Mahamarg, the state’s biggest highway initiative. The project, aimed at extending the highway to the underdeveloped regions of Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, and Gondia, promises to transform the economic landscape of Maharashtra. An investment of Rs 60,000 crore has been earmarked for the project, which will connect 12 districts to India’s longest and highest access-controlled highway.

Sources within the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) say that the groundwork for the extension is already underway, with tenders floated and contractors appointed.

A senior government official noted that the project is expected to progress swiftly under Fadnavis, especially given his success in expediting land acquisition during his earlier tenure.

The government’s ability to provide funds for land acquisition has ensured that the project moves ahead without significant delays, despite the environmental clearances that are in process. “This is Fadnavis’ pet project, and with his return as CM, we are confident the extension will be completed without the usual bureaucratic roadblocks,” said an official familiar with the project.

The Samruddhi Expressway expansion is not just a connectivity initiative but also a key driver of economic development, promising to link industrial hubs and generate employment across several districts. With the final phase of the Mumbai-Nagpur Highway set to open next year, the further extension to Gadchiroli and other routes is expected to bring prosperity to some of Maharashtra’s most underserved areas.

Equally significant is the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, which had been under criticism due to opposition and resistance from residents. Now, with Fadnavis back at the helm, government officials are optimistic that the project will gain momentum. Survey work is already in progress, and while some residents remain skeptical, there is a growing consensus that the redevelopment, which promises new housing and better infrastructure, will move forward.

“The project will be fast-tracked. The confusion among residents will be addressed, and we’re committed to making sure the redevelopment happens smoothly,” said an official involved in the project.

Fadnavis’ leadership is also pivotal for the Mumbai underground Metro expansion, particularly the Metro Line 11 that will connect Wadala to CSMT. The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 16,000 crore, is under stage of approval and expected to manage funds from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is expected to significantly ease Mumbai’s traffic congestion. The underground Metro Line 3, linking Colaba, Bandra, and Seepz, is also expected to be completed by 2025, paving the way for the extension of Metro services across the city as Phase 1 was already commissioned.

Political pundits hailed Fadnavis as a champion of urban transport development, and under his leadership, the Metro projects are poised to get the support they need for quick execution.

“As Maharashtra enters a new phase of development, Fadnavis’ return as Chief Minister signals a renewed commitment to transforming the state’s infrastructure. With major projects already underway and more in the pipeline, the state government is determined to ensure that these initiatives, which hold the potential to shape Maharashtra’s future, move forward without delays or disruptions. For Fadnavis, the goal is clear: to ensure hassle-free development that benefits every corner of the state,” they said.
