After booking a 13-year-old domestic help for attempt to murder, the Nagpada police on Tuesday registered a case against her employer and builder Aqueel Abdul Rehman Khakra for child labour. On Saturday, the girl allegedly threw Khakra’s 18-month-old son Rehan from the fourth floor terrace of Honda Mansion in Nagpada,Byculla.

Senior police inspector Sanjay Kadam said the girl has been sent to the children’s home in Mankhurd and the NGO Childline as well as the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) members would decide where she will stay. The Child Welfare Committee members will also counsel the girl, the police said.

“We have registered a case of attempt to murder against the girl. She needs counselling as her mental condition seems to be unstable,” said Kadam.

“Khakra employed a 13-year-old girl as domestic help when the legal age is 14 years and above. We will prepare a chargesheet against him. Since the sections Khakra was charged under are bailable,he was allowed to go,” he said.

Meanwhile, after being in the paediatric ICU for more than 24 hours,Rehan was shifted to the general ward of the Prince Aly Khan hospital in Mazgaon. “He was suffering from minor concussions and superficial injuries. He has responded well to the treatment and should be discharged in the next few days,” said a doctor.

The police said the girl was scolded by Rehan’s mother for breaking utensils two days before the incident. Around 12 noon on Saturday,Zaitoon Solkar,a senior citizen, was sitting near the window of her ground floor flat when she heard a loud thud. She asked her grandchildren,Aamina T Qazi and Hamza M Solkar,to see where the noise came from.

Aamina told the police she saw Rehan lying between a row of bicycles near their door and Hamza ran to the fourth floor to inform the boy’s parents.
