The Khar police have arrested a duo for duping a man on the pretext of helping him buy a car. The arrested accused,Rohan Sukhava (19) and Ramesh Kamraj (21),had been staying at Virgo Heights in Khar and often flaunted expensive cars and mobile phones. The duo had allegedly spread the word that they were related to a former Karnataka Chief Minister. The two would frequent a clothes shop,Aura, near hotel Mini Punjab,Khar, and had developed friendly relations with the owner, one Nilesh Chajde, after buying expensive clothes from him, said Senior Police Inspector Ajit Sawant from the Khar police.
Chajde introduced the duo to his friend Kamlesh Jain who wanted to buy a car like theirs. The duo told Jain that they could procure cars from other states for a lesser price and took Rs 5,00,000 as token money from Jain. They also issued him a promissory note about the transaction, said Sawant.
However, when the duo started making excuses about the cars delivery,Jain decided to enquire on his own and traced the registration number of the duos BMW to a tour and travel outfit at JB Nagar in Andheri from where they had apparently hired the car for three days. Jain then registered a complaint with the police. We immediately formed teams and nabbed the two youths on Monday night while they were trying to flee, said Sawant. The duo had cheated several others using the same modus-operandi at Chennai. They were produced before Bandra magistrate court and have been remanded to police custody till Monday.
