The driver of Dheeraj Wadhawan, promoter of DHFL arrested by the CBI and ED in connection with alleged Yes Bank fraud case, was on Tuesday waylaid by unidentified persons at Chembur, who claimed to be CBI officers and they also “seized” a bag containing Rs 1.5 lakh, court documents related to Dheeraj and some financial instruments. The fraudsters held the driver and office boy working for the Wadhawans at gunpoint and asked them to “come to the CBI office” the next day.

It was only when the driver went to the CBI office the next day did he realise that he had been duped. Following this, he approached the local Tilak Nagar police station after which they registered an FIR in the matter and are looking for the accused. A team led by senior officers is investigating the matter.

A senior officer said the incident in question took place on Tuesday around 11am when Pankaj Singh (35), who works as an office boy, reached Amar Mahal bridge in a Maruti S Cross Delta along with the driver and were headed to south Mumbai. As they were crossing the bridge, two men waylaid their vehicle on a bike. The duo claimed to be CBI officers and asked Singh to open the car door. Since Dheeraj was facing a CBI case, the duo in the car assumed that the persons were actually CBI officers. They also held them at gunpoint and entered the four-wheeler.

The duo then took the three mobile phones used by them and took the bag that was kept on the backseat of the car which had Rs 1.5 lakh, including some financial instruments and court papers related to Dheeraj Wadhawan. In December, the Bombay High Court granted temporary medical bail to Dheeraj Wadhawan, arrested by the CBI and ED in connection with Yes Bank alleged fraud case. Wadhawan has been permitted to be released for eight weeks for a surgery on his spine. Wadhawan was arrested in 2020.

A source said, “We are going through the CCTV footage to track the two accused. We are probing if the vehicle was targeted since they knew it belonged to Dheeraj Wadhawan and hence posed as CBI officers. The other possibility is that the accused were unaware about the occupants of the car and lucked out since the vehicle belonged to someone who was facing a CBI case as well.”
