The passing of Women’s Reservation Bill in the Parliament is “a milestone in the history of new India”, said Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday, adding it would contribute to greater inclusivity and a stronger democracy.

Addressing the media in Mumbai, Fadnavis said, “The Women’s Reservation Bill, which was unanimously passed in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi was a milestone in independent India. It is not just about increased representation in the Lok Sabha or Assembly. It will have a far reaching impact on the development of the country.”

“The legislation, once becomes Act, will see greater representation of women in Indian Parliament and state assemblies. The demand for 33 per cent women reservation was made 27 years ago. The past successive governments made promises but failed to accomplish them. It was the initiative of PM Modi who took the bold decision to realise the promise into reality,” the deputy CM said.

Adding that women empowerment should not be restricted to politics alone, he said, “When given opportunities, women have already proved their merit and mettle. Beyond politics, we will see women making giant strides in the economic sector. This is just the beginning.”

In Maharashtra, out of 8.97 crore voters, women account for 4.38 crore. In the state legislative assembly with 288 MLAs, women account for just 24 seats. With 33 per cent reservation, women’s MLA strength in Maharashtra assembly will rise to 95.
