Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday announced Rs 125 crore for projects and programmes for backward castes for 2015-16, a year the state government is dedicating as “year of social justice and equality” to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar.

The Dr B R Ambedkar memorial at Indu Mills compound in Mumbai also got a boost with the chief minister inviting a presentation.

Two architects and construction firms led by Mumbai-based Sashi Prabhu and France-based Jacob Farklane unravelled their concepts and designs. The Ambedkar Memorial is being planned as an iconic project on 12.5 acres of land.

Fadnavis said, “I want Dr Ambedkar memorial to be world class. It should be a state of the art memorial…It should serve the objective of unravelling interesting and intellectual facets of Ambedkar. His contribution to the nation and struggle for a casteless society should come through.”

Both presentations displayed different designs.

Both had a stupa and dome shaped structure with auditoriums, research centre, library, lotus ponds and meditation centres integrated with adjoining structures of Chaityabhoomi and Shivaji Park. Both presentations highlighted the philosophy of Ambedkar.

Fadnavis had held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expedite the project that had faced a hiccup over handing over of Indu Mills land to state government for the project.

Earlier, sanctioning the Rs 125 crore, the government said that Ambedkar Pratishthan would be set up in Maharashtra.
