THE MUMBAI police have registered an FIR against a labour contractor and developer following the death of a 23-year-old man, who fell from the fifth floor of a building at a construction site in Vikhroli on Tuesday.
The police registered the FIR based on a complaint given by the deceased Bijoy Karmakar’s father Sunil. The family hails from West Bengal and had come to the city looking for work.
According to the FIR, the incident took place around 10.30am on Tuesday when both the father and the deceased were working at the construction site for building no 252 in Kannamwar Nagar area of Vikhroli. While Sunil was working on the ground floor, Bijoy and three other colleagues were working on the fifth floor, the FIR said.
Bijoy was engaged in removing steel plates from cement columns when he lost his balance. He slipped in the vacant area between the two wings of the building and fell on the ground sustaining injuries to his head.
Sunil was alerted about the incident as his colleagues started shouting for help. He and his colleagues then rushed Bijoy to the local Dr Ambedkar hospital in Tagore Nagar.
After Bijoy was given basic medication there, the doctors told his family to take him to Sion hospital as he had sustained serious injuries. Bijoy was rushed to the Sion hospital where he was declared dead while undergoing treatment.
The family then contacted the local Vikhroli police and filed a complaint that the workers were not given safety gear and there was no netting at the vacant spot between the two wings of the under-construction building where Bijoy slipped and fell.
Based on the complaint, the Vikhroli police have registered an FIR against labour contractor Ganesh Amin and one other person at Shraddha Landmark Pvt Ltd, which was developing the property.
The FIR was registered under sections pertaining to causing death due to negligence, an officer said.
