DDLJ’s screening was extended after there was a public outcry over Maratha Mandir pulling out the film.
After the announcement of the end of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’s nearly 20-year-run at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir on Thursday, the single screen was flooded with phone calls requesting its staff to continue screening the film.
Even though the notice announcing the end of its record run — 1,009 weeks — was put up at the theatre a week ago, very few noticed it earlier and the news that this Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol love saga would finally be pulled out of theatre spread after the last show.
The public outcry that followed it, made Maratha Mandir change its decision. It will screen the movie for at least one more week. The decision regarding its future run will be taken after a meeting with Aditya Chopra, the chairman of producer Yash Raj Films (YRF) and the director of DDLJ, on February 25.

“There were about 250 phone calls through the day with fans demanding why we are taking the film off the theatre. The fans are the ones who have kept it running for so many years. Overwhelmed by the response we have decided to extend its run for another week as of now,” said Manoj Desai, managing director, Maratha Mandir. An official statement released by the producer Yash Raj Films said that it was mutually decided between them and the theatre officials “to end the film’s historic and record-breaking run.”
The initial decision of discontinuing DDLJ resulted from the theatre finding it difficult to accommodate its show amid new releases, the YRF statement said. Desai said the movie would be back in its original slot of 11:30 am from Friday.
