Days after protests, demolition of illegal portions of Dharavi mosque begins

Around 10 days after Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) initiated a drive to demolish the alleged illegal portions of a mosque in Dharavi, the trustees of the mosque Monday began the demolition of the illegal portions of the structure under the guidance of BMC officials.
Earlier on September 21, the BMC had initiated the drive. However, their move met with protests from local community members, following which the deadline was postponed to September 26.
Civic officials said that after the deadline got over, they visited the mosque for site inspection following which, the trustees ensured that the demolition drive will be taken up by them.
“Of the illegal portions, a 30-feet-dome will be demolished, following which other illegal portions like makeshift shops and utility units will be removed,” an official said.
“The demolition of the mosque is being taken up manually by the trustees and it started from the top. So it’s likely going to take atleast a month’s time for the work to get over,” the official added.
