Brawl Court orders shifting of extradited gangster to JJ Hospital A minor brawl between gangster Abu Salem and Dawood Ibrahims henchman Mustafa Dossa in Arthur Road Jail early on Saturday took a serious turn after Dossa allegedly jabbed a spoon into Salems nose. A police complaint was registered with the NM Joshi Marg Police station and both were produced before the holiday court, which directed the injured Salem to be taken to JJ Hospital. We are still investigating. It will be premature to say what transpired. But a case has been registered against both, said senior police inspector Vasant Tajane. Salem was extradited in 2005 from Portugal and is being tried in three cases in the city, including the killing of actress Manisha Koiralas secretary Ajit Diwan. He has been lodged in barrack no. 10 since his arrest. Jail sources said the duo started fighting on their way to breakfast, but it was just verbal initially. But later, the situation worsened as Dossa suddenly pounced on Salem and attacked him with a spoon. Timely intervention by constables helped contain the situation, one of them said. Salem was born in Azamgarh of Uttar Pradesh and is convicted for the 1993 serial blasts case in Mumbai. He is also facing trial in the murder of music baron Gulshan Kumar in 1997. Salem has been in jail since his extradition along with his then girlfriend and Bollywood actor Monica Bedi. He is awaiting verdicts in two cases. The local court has directed jail authorities to shift him to JJ Hospital. However, the officials are yet to act on the orders. A team of doctors have been made available to him on the jail premises. Reasons for the attack is not known, said his lawyer Rashid Ansari. Salem and Bedi were arrested by Interpol in Lisbon,Portugal,on September 20,2002. Salem, wanted in over 50 cases mainly of extortion and murder, was extradited to India on a condition that he would not be given death penalty in any case. He is currently being tried in the designated TADA court in the 1993 blast case under Sections 3(3) of TADA,120 (b) of the IPC and Sections of the Arms Act and Explosives Substances Act for conspiring and aiding the 1993 serial blasts. Mustafa Dossa,an alleged associate of fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim,is also an accused in the 1993 blasts case.
