(Express photo by Ganesh Shirsekar) The Mumbai division of the Central Railway (CR) collected Rs 94.77 lakh in fines from illegal hawkers from April to October 2023, the CR said in a statement.
The action was taken by the Railway Protection Force’s anti-hawkers squad, resulting in 8,624 arrests and the imposition of fines.
In the entire CR division, including Bhusawal, Nagpur, Pune, Solapur, and other locations, over the last seven months, 21,736 individuals were booked and fines totaling Rs. 2.72 crore were imposed under section 144 of the Indian Railway Act.
Interestingly, this year saw a 21 per cent increase in hawking cases compared to the same period in 2022, with 17,967 cases registered from April to October last year.
Meanwhile, to prevent illegal hawking, the Mumbai division of the CR, for the first time, will provide a licence to nearly 2,000 vendors who can sell consumable and non consumable products inside train, provided with some conditions.
Currently selling items inside the train is an illegal activity.
The e-auction will be held on November 28 separately for mail and local trains.
