The son of a police inspector shot himself with his father’s service revolver Wednesday at their Chembur residence. Tejas Sawant,son of Arvind Sawant,senior inspector,Crime Branch died instantly,police said.

Tejas,21,a Bsc student at Ruparel College in Mahim,lived with his parents and a sibling. Around 7 am,he walked into his parents room and took his father’s 9mm pistol from the cupboard,police said.

Fifteen minutes later,the family heard a gun shot and found Tejas lying on the sofa soaked in blood,said police.

“The bullet pierced his skull from behind and exited from the right side of the head,” said an officer who conducted the panchnama. Tejas was taken to Rajawadi Hospital in Vidhyavihar (East) where he was declared broughtdead.

“A probe is on,” said senior inspector Lakshman Bhalerao. Police are studying call detail records of Tejas’s cellphone.

Tilak Nagar police have registered a case of accidental death.
